This Day in MN Hockey History: Nov. 28

1938:  Detroit obtained veteran goaltender Cecil ‘Tiny’ Thompson from the Boston Bruins in exchange for Norm Smith and $15,000.  Boston also called up rookie goalie Frankie Brimsek.

1941:  Former North Stars right winger Norm Beaudin born in Montmartre, Sask.  Beaudin played in the NHL 1967-68 through 1970-71.

1957:  Former NHL right winger Jamie Gallimore born in Edmonton, Alta.  Gallimore played in the NHL 1977-78 with the Minnesota North Stars.

1973:  Former NHL center Brian Bonin born in St. Paul, MN.  Bonin played in the NHL 1998-99 through 2000-01 with the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Minnesota Wild.

1981:  Dino Ciccarelli scored twice and added an assist to lead the North Stars to a 5-3 win over the Philadelphia Flyers, in Minnesota.

1987:  Brian Bellows scored twice and added an assist as the Minnesota North Stars won 6-4, at St. Louis.

1989:  Phil Housley became the 7th player to score 500 points as a member of the Buffalo Sabres with a first period assist, then added a goal as the Sabres beat the Whalers 4-2 in Hartford.

1992:  Gaetan Duchesne and Neal Broten each scored twice and added two assists, and Todd Elik had a goal and three assists to lead the Minnesota North Stars to a 10-3 win against the Sharks, at the Met Center.

2000:  Rookie defenseman Ladislav Benysek scored his first career NHL goal, and Jacques Lemaire became the 42nd coach in NHL history to coach 500 games, when the expansion Wild lost 4-1 at San Jose.

2001:  Herb Brooks, Larry Pleau and the entire 1960 U.S. Olympic Hockey team were named the newest recipients of the NHL’s Lester Patrick Award, to honor their outstanding contributions to hockey in the United States.

2003:  Wes Walz became the fourth player to score 100 points as a member of the Minnesota Wild; he reached the milestone with an assist in a 2-1 loss vs San Jose.

2008:  Boston rookie Blake Wheeler and David Krejci scored goals ten seconds apart in the second period to lead the Bruins to a five-goal second period and a 7-2 win over the visiting New York Islanders.  Seven different Bruins scored in the game.

2008:  Minnesota honored former Wild veteran Wes Walz in a pre-game ceremony before a 4-2 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning (with whom Walz was now an assistant coach).

2009:  Mikko Koivu and Andrew Ebbett scored in the shootout and Josh Harding stopped both of Colorado’s shooters to give the Wild a 3-2 win in Denver.

2010:  Atlanta’s Dustin Byfuglien tied a team record for defensemen with four points (a goal and three assists) and Ondrej Pavelec made 40 saves in a 4-1 win over the visiting Boston Bruins. Byfuglien scored his first three points in 6:10 span in the 1st perid.

2011:  Mikko Koivu scored his 100th career NHL goal to help the Minnesota Wild to a 3-1 win over the visiting Tampa Bay Lightning.
