This Day in MN Hockey History: Dec. 20

1938:  Bruins’ rookie goalie Frankie Brimsek recorded his third straight shutout, and his sixth in seven games, 3-0 over the New York Americans, at Boston Garden.  The win gave Brimsek six shutouts in his first eight NHL games.

1941:  Boston’s Bill Cowley picked up two assists in overtime and Frankie Brimsek won his 9th straight game over the Canadiens in calendar year 1941 to lead the Bruins to a 4-2 win at Montreal.

1941:  Goaltender Sam LoPresti recorded his third career shutout in the Black Hawks’ 2-0 win over the Maple Leafs at Toronto.

1973:  Parker McDonald replaces Jack Gordon as Head Coach of the Minnesota North Stars.

1980:  Ron Greschner became the first defenseman in New York Rangers history to score 100 career goals.  He scored his milestone goal in a 3-3 tie against the North Stars in Minnesota.

1983:  Brian Bellows scored a goal and added two assists to lead the Minnesota North Stars to a 5-2 win over the Blues at St. Louis.

1984:  Devils’ Aaron Broten began a team-record 8 game assist streak as New Jersey lost 8-4 to the Flyers, at Philadelphia.

1985:  Minnesota North Stars traded Gord Sherven and Don Biggs to Edmonton in exchange for Marc Habschied, Don Barber and Emanuel Vivieros.

2000:  Darby Hendrickson scored twice as the Minnesota Wild rallied from a two-goal deficit for a 2-2 tie against the visiting Ottawa Senators.

2007:  Marian Gaborik took 10 shots and scored five goals and an assist as Minnesota won 6-3 over the visiting NY Rangers.  It was the NHL’s first 5-goal game in 11 yrs, & the first time in Wild history a player had more than three goals in one game.  Gaboriks 5 goal game was voted by Wild fans as the #3 ‘moment’ in the Wild’s top ten of the decade (2000-2010). [youtube id=”FDN_S7mO6jo” width=”620″ height=”360″]

2007:  Shane Doan scored a shorthanded goal to tie the game with 41.5 seconds remaining in regulation, and rookie Peter Mueller scored the lone shootout goal as Phoenix won 3-2 at San Jose. Coyotes ended an 8-game losing streak to the Sharks.
