This Day in MN Hockey History: Dec. 28

1969:  Charlie Burns took over as the Minnesota North Stars coach, replacing Wren Blair.  Two months later he suited up again, and became the final player/coach in NHL history.

1972:  North Stars defeated Montreal 3-2 to extend their team record home winning streak to 11 games.

1973:  Dennis Hextall had three assists to lead the Minnesota North Stars to a 5-2 win over the Canucks at Vancouver.

1976:  Minnesota rookie Glen Sharpley and Bill Fairbairn each scored a goal and added two assists to lead the North Stars to an 8-3 win over the Kings at the Met Center.

1981:  Defenseman Brad Maxwell scored twice and added an assist to lead the North Stars to a 4-4 tie with the Colorado Rockies, in Minnesota.

1982:  Dave Christian scored a goal and added two assists to lead the Winnipeg Jets to a 4-4 tie, at Vancouver.

1983:  Craig Hartsburg scored a goal and added two assists to lead the North Stars to an 8-6 win over the Maple Leafs in Minnesota.

1984:  Tom Barrasso recorded his fourth NHL shutout (and second in a row) as the Sabres beat Winnipeg 4-0, to extend their home undefeated streak against the Jets to 10 games (9-0-1).  Phil Housley scored a goal and two assists.

1986:  Neal Broten scored a ‘pure’ hat trick (for his 5th career hat trick) as the Minnesota North Stars lost 5-4 to the Jets, at Winnipeg.

1989:  Basil McRae picked up 30 penalty minutes for the Minnesota North Stars in a 1-1 tie at Chicago.

2000:  St. Louis Blues acquired Dan Trebil from the Pittsburgh Penguins, in exchange for Marc Bergevin.

2002:  Trent Klatt and Todd Bertuzzi each had two goals as the Canucks scored on 5 of its first 11 shots, 7-3 win against the visiting Anaheim Mighty Ducks.

2002:  Antti Laaksonen scored at 19:04 of the final period to give the Wild a 4-3 win at Buffalo.

2005:  Randy Robitaille and Marian Gaborik scored on the Wild’s first two shots to lead Minnesota to a 4-2 win against the Oilers at Edmonton.

2007:  Zach Parise scored the only goal in the shootout as the Devils won 2-1 against the visiting Buffalo Sabres.

2008:  Chicago Blackhawks set a franchise record with their ninth straight victory, 4-1 at Minnesota.  Dustin Byfuglien led the scoring with two goals and two assists and became the first Minnesota native to score four point against the Wild at home.

2009:  Minnesota Wild tied a team record with their 10th victory of the month, a 4-3 win in Los Angeles.
