In reply to <a href="https://minnesotahockeymag.com/anderson-refs-people/#comment-1536">Dan Schwartz</a>.

Dan you are assuming that officials work 40, 1 hour games a week, 52 weeks a year. And that is as unrealistic as it gets. If it paid that well we wouldn't have a 1st year attrition rate of 50% and a 5 year attrition rate north of 90%. I can tell you most officials don't do it for the money. We do it to stay involved in the game. With that said, no amount of money is worth being berated and questioned by kids and coaches for 60-90 minutes and leaving the rink feeling miserable.

Since the topic of money was raised, isn't it incorrect to claim $35/hour for an exhibition game (one hour long) is such a pittance that it is, "safe to guess most officials aren't in it for the money?" Quick math shows that $35/hour translates to the equivalent of a job which pays about $70,000 per year. In a state, and country for that matter, where the median household income is less than $60,000/year, the facts indicate that pay is likely to be a primary motivator for all but the most wealthy of officials.
