Mittelstadt assists Eden Prairie’s entry into state semifinals

St. Paul – Casey Mittelstadt was all over the ice, or at least it seemed that way because he was all over the scoresheet.

The Eden Prairie junior forward had a goal and five assists, contributing to all of his team’s goals but one, in a 7-3 Eagles (20-7-2) victory over Anoka (18-10-0) in the Class 2A quarterfinal matchup Thursday evening at Xcel Energy Center.

“I think the key in this game was our team speed,” said Eden Prairie coach Lee Smith. “I still think we’re the best skating team in the state that’s left. When we get it rolling, it was really good.”

The Eagles, looking for their first state title since 2009, used some of that speed to their advantage for three goals within about three minutes in the second period. Mittelstadt assisted on two of those. He brought his season assist total to 45 and has 29 goals, leading the team in both categories.

Anoka coach Todd Manthey said afterward that they knew how good Mittelstadt was, they knew he had speed. They just didn’t realize quite how fast until they saw him out there, he said.

“That Mittelstadt kid, he’s a player,” Manthey said. “You definitely notice when he’s on the ice.”

Mittelstadt didn’t do it alone either. Junior forward Hunter Johannes and junior defenseman Nicky Leivermann each scored two goals and an assist each. Mr. Hockey finalist Michael Graham and senior forward Spencer Steen provided the other goals.

The game was 1-1 after the first period, with Anoka tying it on the power play with about four minutes to go. Johannes scored his first goal at 3:58 of the first.

“We weathered the storm, and we just kept trucking from there,” said Anoka senior forward Michael Talbot. “They got some good D that kind of stepped up and took away our options.”

Eden Prairie rattled off a four-goal second period. They’ve outscored opponents 54-22 in second periods this season. They started to relax a little bit with a 5-1 lead, then Anoka made it 5-2 with just over a minute left in the second.

That woke up the Eagles during the second intermission.

“In the locker room, we kind of just said, ‘alright, get one more, then go for the jugular,’” Mittelstadt said. “And then roll and have fun the rest of the game.”

His goal at the two-minute mark of the third period was huge, he said. It gave the Eagles a comfortable 6-2 cushion.

Despite the final score and shots on goal total (39-15 in favor of Eden Prairie), Anoka its own bright spot – Talbot, who scored a hat trick for the Tornadoes.

Anoka, which upset Centennial in the Section 5 semifinals, came into the tournament riding a 10-game winning streak.

“Certainly something you dream about as a kid,” Talbot said, of playing in the state tournament at the X. “I was lucky enough to get three of them.”

BOYS’ CHAMPIONSHIP GAME SUMMARIES

Open division: Greenway 6, Minneapolis 3.

Grant Troumbly scored a hat trick to lead Greenway, of Coleraine, Minn., to the Schwan Cup open division championship. Troumbly opened the scoring at 4:42 of the second period. Dylan Sundquist added a second goal just 13 seconds later, and the Raiders jumped to a 2-0 lead.

Minneapolis tied the game 2-2 later in the second period on goals by Max Kjome and Jake Erickson, before Troumbly’s second goal of the game put Greenway back on top 3-2 at the second intermission.

In the final period, Bay Zuehlke put the Raiders ahead by two goals again, and they never let Minneapolis closer than a single goal. A late Taylor Lantz goal and a Troumbly empty netter with just one second remaining gave Greenway its final 6-3 win.

Bronze division: Anoka 7, Bloomington Kennedy 2.

Anoka spread their seven goals around to seven different players as the Tornadoes dominated Bloomington Kennedy 7-2 to win the bronze division championship.

Jared Wilber put Anoka on top at 1:21 of the first period. Grant Johnson netted the equalizer for Kennedy four minutes later. But then Anoka pulled away, with goals coming from Carter Perry, Michael Talbot, Hunter Wanous, IsaacJohnson, Reese Grailer and Taylor O’Neill.

Anoka outshot Kennedy 48-26.

Silver division: Rosemount 3, Mahtomedi 2 (overtime).

Grant Horsager scored on a solo goal rush 1:01 into the overtime period to give Rosemount a 3-2 victory in the silver division championship game.

In an evenly played, tight game, it was fitting the game went to overtime. Shots were nearly equal, 26-25 in favor of Rosemount, as were quality offensive chances.

Luke Posner scored both Mahtomedi goals, both in the second period. Peyton Norder scored in the first period for Rosemount for an early lead. Then after falling behind in the second period, Brendan Olson scored the Irish’s tying goal at 4:22. Regulation ended at 2-2, before Horsager’s extra-time winner.

Gold division: Eden Prairie 4, Minnetonka 3.

Casey Mittelstadt scored twice with Cole Lawrence and Michael Graham added goals as Eden Prairie raced to a 4-1 lead at the 3:44 mark of the third period. Then Minnetonka stepped up the pace and staged a furious comeback.

Brendan Ryan scored twice. His first goal narrowed the gap to two goals at 5:58 of the period, followed by another goal at 10:15 to cut the lead to one. But that was a close as they would get.

Eden Prairie won their first Schwan Cup championship.

Perennial north-metro adversaries, Blaine and Anoka, took their rivalry on the road to the State Fairgrounds Coliseum on Wednesday in a Section 5AA section semifinal matchup. It appeared to have the makings of a close contest early on, but the top-seeded Bengals pulled away over the final two periods for a 3-0 victory to advance to Friday’s title game against No. 3 Centennial, 4-0 winners over Maple Grove.

Second-period goals by Blaine’s Notermann brothers, Luke and Brandon, broke open a tight game while Bengals goaltender Andrew Houle pitched a shutout with 14 saves. Robbie Goor stood out in the Tornadoes’ crease with 30 saves in a losing cause.

The Bengals entered the Coliseum for the first time since their quarterfinal exit at the hands of Champlin Park a year ago. But Blaine coach Dave Aus said there were no demons for his team to exorcise in their return.

“Everybody talks about that even though they have nothing to do with each other and we’re a much better team, I think, than we were a year ago,” Aus said.

After Anoka trade punches with the Bengals throughout a fairly even and scoreless first period, Blaine began to exert its will over the contest in the second by exploiting its speed advantage over the Tornadoes. The Bengals rattled off the period’s first six shots en route outshooting Anoka 13-2 and taking a 2-0 lead.

Aus said he thought his team tired the Tornadoes out noting that Anoka’s Adam Orn and Gavin Putt received significant ice time.

“It’s hard to chase guys around the rink a lot and we’ve got guys really on every line that can move,” Aus said. “That’s what we said before the game, we’ve got to use our speed and just try to wear them out and we said it’s not going to be easy.”

Blaine sophomore Luke Notermann broke the scoreless tie with a pretty wraparound goal beating Goor to the left post for his 14th of the season at 10:48.

“That was big because you could just feel on the bench there was some relief,” Aus said. “When that happened then everybody kind of just seemed to settle in and I felt pretty good.”

Not to be outdone, Notermann’s brother, Brandon, pounced on a loose puck in the crease just over two minutes later for the senior’s 13th on the year.

The score could easily have been 4-0 had it not been for Goor’s strong play in the period. The senior netminder made a pair of point-blank saves, first with his left pad on Joey Lau at the 5:10 mark and next with a glove stop on Easton Brodzinski at 16:43.

“We knew that Goor would play well and we didn’t do a great job in the first period, but I thought as the game went on we got better,” Aus said. “He was tough, I mean, he robbed a couple of sure goals.”

As happy as Aus was about the Bengals getting three pucks past Goor, he was most proud of Blaine’s play in its own zone.

“Defensively we get a bad rap but we’ve been very good defense lately,” Aus said. “After the first period we said we want play better in the [defensive] zone and we did that.”
