I am sure there are thousands of people who have a story about Henry Boucha and his benevolence.

With a heavy heart, this story is how Henry convinced me to do a special issue on his beloved Warroad community, and the making of one of my all-time favorite special issues featuring Warroad hockey. I also want to share my last in-person visit with Henry as we discussed faith and the spiritual side of life for hours.

Henry’s death on Sept. 18th, 2023 left a void in the hockey world that will never be filled. Henry and his legend was bigger than life. Henry may have passed on, but his legend will always be with us.

I met Henry more than a decade ago, when we had booths next to one another at the Let’s Play Hockey trade show. That was fortuitous because wherever Henry went it, he attracted a crowd. By the end of that weekend, Henry and I had developed a friendship that continued up until his passing.

MHM Photo.

Henry and I had a love of hockey that went beyond the ice. He was always promoting the game and those who played it.

About seven years ago, I met Henry at the grand opening of the Royal Club in Lake Elmo where he was helping sell real estate. Henry had invited me to the event and said he had something else he wanted to share with me.

When I got there, Henry started right in with the Warroad hockey idea and told me we really needed to go to Warroad and put together a special issue. I initially liked the idea but told Henry I needed to see if it was even possible to do a whole magazine on such a small town of less than 2,000 people.

I reminded Henry that Warroad is a six-plus-hour drive from the Twin Cities, and I didn’t have a lot of spare time to go and look. I asked, how did he plan on getting me up there?

Henry said he would fly me up, on the Marvin Windows plane that next week, so I could take a look for myself. He also said he would help me get the stories and the sponsors to make this a reality. The next week, I was called by a Warroad Hockey Town USA person, letting me know that I had a seat reserved for early Saturday morning, and to catch the flight in Bloomington at the Signature Aviation terminal.

I arrived at 5 a.m. for the flight out of the private terminal at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, where I was about to hop on a private jet with some of the greatest names in Minnesota hockey. In the terminal were past and present prominent NHL players who were heading up to play in the annual Warroad Celebrity Golf Tournament.

I looked at the scene and thought it would be best if I boarded as the last person on the plane, sitting wherever the open seat was. I boarded the plane and looked to find the open seat that was next to Lou Nanne. I put my briefcase down on the seat next to Nanne, and he politely told me no, that seat was taken by Neal Broten. Nanne then hollered to the back of the plane: “Brot’s get your butt up here.” I looked and saw Broten get up from the rear of the plane, and now figured that would be my seat in back. As I got to the back of the plane, I sat face-to-face across from Ryan Suter, who was sitting next to Tony Hrkac, a previous Hobey Baker winner for the University of North Dakota.

With the seating arrangements now figured out, I was on my way to Warroad for an epic day. I had a few copies of the magazines and gave both Suter and Hrkac copies. They were impressed with the magazine, and we talked about my trip and what it took to make a magazine happen. Suter gave me his cellphone number; he wanted to advertise a product he was bringing to market.

When the plane landed, we all jumped into cars that were waiting for us, and it was onto the course for the day’s festivities. At the Warroad Estates Golf Course, I met all of the legends of Warroad hockey, as well as many other hockey celebrities.

By the end of the day, I knew why this town of less than 2,000 people really needed to have a special edition and was accurately called Hockeytown USA. Now it was time to get back with Henry and figure out the details.

I met with Henry that week to discuss the next steps. He said that if I drove him up he would take care of everything else. About a month later, we were both back in Warroad to get down to business to capture the story on what makes Warroad Hockeytown USA.

I had heard some stories on the wilder side of Henry. He knew when it was time to work, when it was time to kick back and when it was time to have some fun. I saw this while living with him that week.

We started by settling in for a week at a condo on the Warroad Estates Golf Course. From there, Henry took me around town daily, showing me the rich hockey history and life in Warroad. Henry made the morning calls and had people lined up, opening doors of opportunities for stories or sponsors, and then relaxed in the evenings taking in a grandson’s football or granddaughter’s volleyball game.

True to his word, all of this came true. Henry’s love for his hometown and his presence made it easy to get people on board with content or as an advertiser. We worked hard getting the stories and sponsors. With Henry’s help and persistence, we did in a week what typically takes a team of writers and ad sales people a month or more to do. By the end of the week, we had more than enough content to do a complete magazine, with enough sponsors to create a 100-page magazine.

That Saturday night, it was time to celebrate a successful week. Henry said we needed to go out to one of his friends’ who was having a surprise 50th birthday party. We had a blast. When they gave the birthday grandpa some small sticks of dynamite, it made a lasting memory, hearing the sizzle as the wick burned and then the blast, each time they went off. As the designated driver, we stayed late, then closed down the local bars, and made it back to the condo around 2 a.m. for a late-night steak dinner that Henry had planned earlier in the day.

After this magazine was produced and on the shelves statewide, I got a call from Henry, saying we needed to really promote this. I asked what did he have in mind? A week later, I found myself with Henry on the radio of the north, 100,000-watt WCCO AM and Sports to the Max with Mike Max. Henry glowed as he spoke for 45 minutes on his hometown and the sport he loved. He shared the stories that we covered in the magazine and then about his own career. My time on the air was about three minutes to Henry’s 42, which was appropriate for the show.

I am so thankful for all the time I spent with Henry. Up until very recently, Henry and I met at various events and hockey games and helped each other out where possible. Prior to the Covid mess, I helped him with some of his book signings and he helped me at our charity golf tournament or our banquet to honor lifetime achievers in hockey. We also went to watch some pro and high school hockey games together.

Henry Boucha at his book signing. (MHM Photo)

Henry had a deep spiritual side to him that few knew about. Besides our love for hockey, I think one of the reasons we enjoyed each other was he was a very spiritual person and knew my faith in Christ was real to me. I enjoyed sharing spiritual thoughts with Henry. He loved his Creator and had a reverence for life. I would call Henry on occasion to get his take on something in the wild I had just seen. He always had a spiritual explanation.

The last time I was with Henry was when he invited me over several months ago for a steak lunch. Henry shared that his heart was now in rough shape and the danger of surgery was almost as bad as his condition. The doctors at Mayo Clinic told Henry that they did not want to operate.

We spoke for hours about life and death and all that was going on in the world.

I shared my Christian faith with him, we agreed about the Creator, but Henry wasn’t convinced Jesus was the only way. After several hours of a very deep conversation, I told him I had to get going to go to see my mom and dad for dinner. Henry asked if I could call my parents to see if he could go with me.. My parents were thrilled to have Henry over for dinner, where they talked hockey for a few hours. On the way back to his home we continued our discussion on the afterlife.

The Minnesota Hockey Magazine Warroad Special Edition would not have happened without Henry. He not only introduced me to the stories but also the sponsors, who all jumped on board in making this happen.

The link to the magazine Henry helped bring to life is below. To view the magazine, click on the cover and scroll to flip the pages. By reading this magazine, you will find out what makes Warroad Hockeytown USA and is a go-to source for the locals.

We all have Henry to thank for keeping these stories alive.

Hill-Murray used late fireworks to overcome a final-minute deficit in defeating its bitter rival White Bear Lake to cap Hockey Day Minnesota 2023.

Literally.

The 91st all-time meeting between these northeast metro schools, separated by just five miles, had another unforgettable chapter written, and not just because this edition was played outside. In a series that has featured countless dramatics and unforgettable endings, this one will go down in the history books forever.

Trailing by a goal in the final minute, the Pioneers used some early celebratory fireworks as motivation to find the tying goal with 46 seconds remaining in regulation before winning 2:06 into the extra session.

Brady Ingebritson is mobbed by teammates celebrating his game winner. (MHM Photo / Jeff Wegge)

Both goals were scored by senior captain Brady Ingebritson, who celebrated his tying and winning exploits by leaping into the glass in front of a jubilant — and stunned — Pioneer student section.

“I’ll be talking about this the rest of my life,” Ingebritson said. “OT, Hockey Day, against White Bear Lake. This is just a dream come true.

“And I love the fireworks.”

Moments before the goal, Hill-Murray coach Bill Lechner called timeout to gather his troops ahead of an offensive zone faceoff and to pull his goalie for the extra attacker.

Then, rather inexplicably, a fireworks display reminiscent of Fourth of July grand finale, began going off along the near horizon about 200 yards from the ice sheet.

Did someone hit the button too early? Was there confusion with the horn signifying the end of the timeout?

Regardless of what happened, it’s set in motion a series of events that will live in infamy in these parts for years.

With smoke from the display settling in, and fireworks still going off in the distance, officials dropped the puck to resume play in the White Bear Lake defensive zone. Forced into a front-row viewing of the pyrotechnics was Bears sophomore goaltender Leo Gabriel, who corralled a first shot, but couldn’t contain a second, with Ingebritson whipping the puck through the haze and into the cage.

“The fireworks, that got my energy up,” Ingebritson said. “I got together with the guys and said, ‘look at this, they’re already celebrating the win.’

“Our energy was going. The fireworks were great, that helped us.”

It’s not often Lechner, the legendary 69-year-old head coach of the Pioneers, sees something new at a hockey rink. But this certainly qualified.

“We always talk about, ‘play between the glass,’ if we’re focused, they don’t know if they’re playing in front of 10 people or 10,000,” Lechner said. “It’s easier said than done, especially with kids. They’re not pros.”

It’s a consistent message that Lechner preaches, regardless of the setting, the opponent or the time of game, and in this case, that calm paid off.

When things got wild at the end, Hill-Murray looked calm and composed in a setting that was anything but.

“It’s easy to say when you win that you have the perfect formula,” Lechner said. “It’s a little bit early to have everything falling into place, and we still don’t have all the pieces, but we’ll get some guys back and we’ll get closer.”

Quarterfinal matchup gives new-look Moose another shot at Hermantown

The third game of the Class A quarterfinals at the Minnesota state high school hockey tournament, on its face, appears to be the matchup that might hold the most intrigue for an obvious reason.

Monticello will take on top-seed Hermantown in a rematch of the 2017 Class A championship game – which the Hawks won in double overtime – allowing the opportunity for the Moose to exact its revenge.

But this is a different Monticello team with different goals and expectations with just some of the same pieces off last year’s team that made the memorable run to the title game. The former Monticello/Annandale/Maple Lake also dropped its co-op with Annandale, going by just Monticello now despite Maple Lake remaining part of the co-op.

“It’s the same experience, but with a different group of guys,” said junior forward and captain Troy Dahlheimer.

“Last year, going into the tournament, our coach told us to enjoy the experience (of state) and just have fun. It turned out, once we got past the No. 2 seed (Delano), it only got easier from there. We knew we were a good team, we were really excited and that’s what drove us all the way to the championship.”

The primary instinct may be to figure Monticello returns an experienced roster with a group that’s played on the big stage, but only eight players return from last season’s roster.

The Moose will rely on Dahlheimer, who had two goals and three assists in the Section 5A Playoffs, for an offensive charge.

Monticello lost St. Cloud State verbal commit Ben Ward (a junior last season who scored 28 goals with 50 assists in 2017-18) to the NAHL and Nick Zwack (31 goals, 31 assists) to graduation. Both were Dahlheimer’s linemates.

“We’re a young team, but it really shows what our program has in store,” said Dahlheimer, who’s the Moose’s top-returning scorer from last season when he had 45 points and has mirrored that total with 45 points heading into state.

“We’ve really been letting these young guys know what an unreal experience the state tournament is.”

Monticello’s Troy Dahlheimer fights through a Ryan Sandelin check in the 2017 Class 1A state title game. MHM Photo / Jeff Wegge)

An eight-game stretch in which the Moose went 2-5-1 to end the regular season could’ve sent the team stumbling into sections. Monticello took that skid not only as a team-galvanizing experience, but also to get familiar with top-notch opponents.

Ranked Class A teams like Sartell and St. Cloud Cathedral beat the Moose, as did state tournament entrants Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato (Class A) and St. Michael-Albertville (Class AA).

“At the end of the year, we played faster teams and I like to think it helped our team play faster once we got to sections,” Dahlheimer said.

Added Monticello coach Eric Nelson: “We weren’t looking down at that point. We knew we had work to do. Sartell was a good team and we played them tough. We knew if we played like we did against Sartell and the way we played for a period and a half against Cathedral, we’d have a good opportunity to make it out of our section.”

Nelson said senior captain and defenseman Tyler Anderson is another key returnee from last season who wants to leave his mark on the program.

The goaltender Tyler Klatt is back to help the Moose attempt to replicate last season’s success and his team will likely need him to replicate his own success in order to make that happen.

Klatt posted a .929 saves percentage in the 2017 postseason and he’s been steady lately, stopping 94 percent of the shots he faced in sections.

“Klatt’s really stood on his head at times,” Dahlheimer said. “He comes up big on breakaways and good shots. He can make big saves when we need one.”

Klatt may have been the main reason the Moose were able to hang with Hermantown in the championship for three regulation periods and nearly two overtimes. He held the Hawks scoreless on 15 shots after the first period, which Monticello finished with one shot on goal.

The Moose put two quick goals on the board early in the second period, but Hermantown tied the game at three late in regulation to force OT.

Just when the game appeared to be lost on a goal in the second OT, the goal was overturned because of goaltender interference on the Hawks, giving Monticello new life.

“After the goal, I burst into tears,” Klatt said. “And when they called it off, I think we got momentum back a little bit.”

Dylan Samberg eventually netted the game-winner late in double overtime to clinch the Hawks’ third state championship.

Hermantown has experienced big changes of its own, with longtime coach Bruce Plante’s retirement after last season. Also gone is Samberg, a second-round NHL draft pick and defenseman at Minnesota-Duluth, and Minnesota State commit Ryan Sandelin.

“They’re obviously still a great team,” Nelson said. “They’re going to be fast, they’re going to move the puck well, they’re going to be physical like most northern teams are. They got the No. 1 seed for a reason.”

Thunderhawks claim first title in 37 years with win over Moorhead

Grand Rapids forward Gavin Hain scored three times and added an assist to lead his school to its first state championship in 27 years.

In the battle of each team’s top lines, the Thunderhawks’ unit of Hain, Micah Miller and Blake McLaughlin combined for eight points (6-3–9) in a 6-3 Class 2A state championship game win over Moorhead in the first all-northern final since Roseau beat the Thunderhawks 5-1 in 2007.

Gavin Hain (8) and Blake McLaughlin celebrate Grand Rapids winning a state championship. (MHM Photo / Jeff Wegge)

“Pucks were bouncing on my stick and, obviously, I couldn’t do it without my teammates,” Hain said. “They were doing the work and the pucks just laid there for me and I was lucky enough to bear down and bury them.”

Grand Rapids coach Trent Klatt found it hard to put his feelings into words.

“I’m just so excited to see the excitement in the kids’ eyes,” Klatt said. “They played hard all year, they sacrificed a lot and they were rewarded tonight.”

Moorhead (24-4-3) suffered its first loss since Dec. 29 and its first loss by more than one goal all season.

“We didn’t have an answer for their top line and our kids did their best,” Moorhead coach John Ammerman said. “We made plenty of plays, just not enough to win.

Grand Rapids (23-7-1) outshot the Spuds 30-27 with Michael Heitkamp adding a pair of assists and goaltender Zach Stejskal stopping 24 Moorhead shots for the win.

The Class 2A title is the first for the Thunderhawks and the first state championship for Grand Rapids since beating Hill-Murray 2-1 in 1980 when it was a single-class tournament. Moorhead is still in search of its first state championship having now lost in the title game for the eighth time.

The Spuds visited Grand Rapids on Feb. 11 and came away with a 4-0 victory. It was the first of two straight late-season losses for the the Thunderhawks who lost 4-1 to Cloquet three days later.

“Anytime you go through the course of a whole season a team’s gonna go through spurts where they’re playing really well and times when they’re not playing so well,” Klatt said.

“We were just in one of our kind of funks when Moorhead came through,” Klatt said. “We got what we deserved, they spanked us pretty good because they’re a great hockey team.

“We took that difficult week or two and learned from it and I give the guys a lot of credit to look themselves in the mirror and figure out exactly what each and every one of them had to do to change to get to where we are today.”

Hain got the scoring started with a power play goal 7:26 into the game when his blast from the top of the right circle squeezed between Moorhead goalie Lance Leonard’s pads. McLaughlin’s wrister from nearly the same spot three minutes later made it 2-0 Grand Rapids after one.

It remained that way until Hain scored twice in a 2:56 span, including the eventual game winner at the 11:48 mark to complete his hat trick.

“It’s a great experience playing with those two guys,” Miller said of his linemates. “I think we all have the same goal and we just worked really hard together and we got some good chemistry and we just built off that.”

Moorhead’s Cole O’Connell and Grand Rapids’ Jack Burnson battle for a puck in the Class 2A state championship game. (MHM Photo / Jeff Wegge)

With the Thunderhawks leading 4-0 in the waning moments of the second period, junior Carter Randklev breathed new life into the Spuds with a snipe from the top of the right circle with 1:15 to go. But Moorhead wasn’t done as its top line of Cole O’Connell, Randklev and Jack Stetz combined on a pretty tic-tac-toe play with Stetz finishing Randklev’s backdoor feed with 16 seconds left to make it 4-2 after two.

But Miler’s goal from between the circles 7:08 into the third boosted Grand Rapids’ lead back to three. Moorhead, however, wasn’t done yet as Jacob Holtgrewe scored two minutes later to make it 5-3.

The Spuds pressed hard over the game’s final seven minutes but McLaughlin’s empty-net goal with 1:15 remaining put the game out of reach.

“I’m not much of an emotional guy but tonight was going to be sad either way because either we lost or they were done,”a visibly emotional Ammerman said. “I’m not a hugger and I’m not a cryer and I did a lot of both today and that’s what sports can do.”
