The Bears finished the season with a 35-10-4 overall record. The regular season included tournament championships in White Bear Lake and Rochester. They also took home 3rd place trophies in Cloquet and Maple Grove. Then the playoff run started… The Black and Orange opened District 2 play as the #4 seed. They went on to defeat Highland Central, North St. Paul, and Stillwater to earn the D2 Championship. In the North Region, they defeated Virginia and Cloquet to set up a match up with their friends to the east, Mahtomedi. In the most exciting game to date, the Bears prevailed 5-4 in triple overtime to win the North Region Championship and punch their ticket to the State Tournament. In the State Tournament the Bears opened with a victory over Eagan Blue 7-1, followed by a 3-2 win over a highly skilled and fast Minneapolis Purple squad. This set up the State Championship game versus pre-tournament favorite Edina White. The title game was yet another nail bitter with many lead changes. The game was tied at 4 late in the third when the tenacious and determined Bears took the lead 5-4 with under three minutes to play. They had to withstand the buzzing Hornets offense over the last two minutes to secure the State PeeWee B Title. Icing on the cake for an amazing playoff run! The State Champion Bears are Ryan Dehling, Charlie Rapheal, Ben Boldt, Cody Grahn, Tony Rossini, Nick Denault, Paul Moris, Chance Johnstone, Michael Rittenhouse, Sam Yobbie, Jacob Oczak, Roddy Schultz, Jack Montgomery, Colby Rautenberg, Nathan Thies, and Seth Valento. Coaches are Steve Oczak, Kelly Rittenhouse, Sam Schultz, Steve Moris, and manager Meg Rapheal." width="850" height="638" srcset="https://minnesotahockeymag.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/PWB1.jpg 640w, https://minnesotahockeymag.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/PWB1-100x75.jpg 100w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 850px) 100vw, 850px" />
State Champs! .

Proceeds from August 8 event to help send kids in need to hockey camp.

We are excited to announce that our Minnesota Hockey Magazine (MHM) Team on behalf of the MHM Foundation is hosting our second annual charity golf tournament! Join us on Friday, August 8, for a day on the greens at Pheasant Hills Golf Course. Pheasant Hills is about 40 minutes from downtown St. Paul near Hammond, Wisconsin, and is an easy drive.

[vimeo id=”64531231″ width=”620″ height=”360″]

All proceeds will benefit Minnesota youth looking to attend hockey development camps to improve their skills, but may not have the means to do so. Last year MHM sent kids to the FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes) hockey camp in Alexandria, MN.

Henry Boucha’s legend lives on. Mention the name and you will hear about the time that Henry did another amazing feat like scoring the fastest goal in NHL history to start a game or never leaving the ice for the entire high school game and then winning the game in overtime. His latest achievement is as an author having just released his autobiography, “Henry Boucha, Ojibwa -Native American Olympian”. This Saturday and Sunday, Minnesota hockey fans will have a chance to purchase a book, meet Henry and have it signed as the hockey icon will be at Dave’s Sport Shop in Fridley and Stillwater. Boucha will be in the Fridley store Saturday from 11am-4pm and the Stillwater store Sunday from 11am-4pm to meet the fans, sign books, and talk hockey.

Henry Boucha as an Olympian
(Submitted Photo)

When Henry’s name was mentioned to his fellow 1972 Olympic Silver medalist team mate Ron Naslund, the first thing that came to mind was how tireless Henry was. Naslund, a Minneapolis Roosevelt player was asked to try out for the Olympic team late in the tryout process, and as a 28 year old player, made the team. Playing against the world’s top players, Naslund watched with amazement and recalled “Henry was just a tireless player. I mean he never got tired. He would kill penalties, work the power play and just keep going, just a terrific hockey player and a real good guy”.

Marv Jorde, a winner of USA Hockey’s Ironman award given to people that have tirelessly given to the game and is a story in himself that we will tell another day, was mesmerized the first time he saw Henry play.

Jorde coached the St. Paul Park Indian High School Hockey team in the 60’s and 70’s and recalled ” The first time I saw Henry Boucha play was his sophomore year. we were playing on the Iron Range in the Holiday Classic and Boucha was playing defense. The more I watched him, the more mesmerized I became, as not one time did he lose the puck in his defensive zone and he just controlled the game. This was against one of my very good Park High teams (the team lost in the sectional final that year). I watched him play the whole game as he never once came off the ice. With the score tied 2-2 and now in overtime,

Henry Boucha with Warroad Warriors team mates
(Submitted Photo)

Henry decided it was time to end the game, and skated an end to end rush, and once in on his top two defenders, he did a spin move causing the two defenders to collide while he split them and went in to score the winning goal”.

Boucha is a treasure in Minnesota Hockey lore and is considered to be one of the best all-around athletes to come out of Minnesota. He participated in football, hockey, baseball, and track and was offered full scholarships to compete in all four sports. Henry chose hockey and his story speaks for itself. From his youth days of winning the Bantam state championship for Warroad, to the memorable “David vs Goliath” state final with Edina, his Minnesota legend started.

Henry Boucha was instrumental in the USA medalling
(Submitted Photo)

Add onto the world scene, where he helps in leading his team to qualify for the Olympics after getting the US out of the B pool in the 1971 World tournament, to earning a silver medal in Sapporo Japan, and finally playing in the NHL and WHA, Boucha’s career is inspiring from his athletic accomplishments and even more of accepting his Native American culture and making a difference. For those old enough to recall Henry Boucha, they will know the impact he had on hockey at all levels in Minnesota and for those that are younger learning a piece of hockey history about this icon makes his book “Henry Boucha, Ojibwa Native American Olympian” a must read.

It ties together a story of a person that overcame a number of personal tragedies and heartache to achieve heights at the highest of levels in his profession. He holds the record for the fastest goal scored in the NHL while with the Detroit Red Wings. A horrific eye injury ended his career after six seasons in the NHL. He continued to play in the WHA with the Minnesota Fighting Saints and after many surgeries retired from hockey at the age of 25.

Henry Boucha scores his first NHL goal with Detroit
(Submitted Photo)

If you can’t make it to Dave’s in Fridley or Stillwater this weekend, purchase Boucha’s book online at HenryBoucha.com or at Amazon.com. Be sure to check out this week’s Minnesota Hockey Magazine Radio Show as Henry discusses his life in and out of hockey with our host Pete Waggoner. Last year, Scott Tiffany and MinnesotaHockeyMagazine.com sat down to talk hockey in a multiple part series. Here are the first and last parts of those interviews. For the whole story, you really don’t want to miss out, we recommend buying his book this weekend at Dave’s Sports Shop.[vimeo id=”62318782″ width=”620″ height=”360″] [vimeo id=”64475284″ width=”620″ height=”360″]

Last night at the Xcel Energy Center I was on the losing end of a winning game. Early on in the first period my beloved iPhone, a tool that allows me to record post game interviews, check quick stats and of course keep contact with the world, decided it didn’t want to work anymore. On any day that wasn’t a game day I probably wouldn’t have been so bothered by it, but there I was in the press box without a key piece of my life.

As the Wild scored goals and chalked up their first win in seven I Googled how to get my touch screen to start responding again. First I had to try to hard restart it, no luck. Next I had to erase it and perform a factory reset. I went through this process a solid five or six times, occasionally contemplating the idea of deep-sixing the handset and letting it fly off the press box level to its demise, before finally conceding defeat and admitting I was powerless to help my phone.

As my iPhone saga unfolded a few members of the press noticed my obvious frustration and came to my rescue with recorded audios I could use as well as calming words meant to refocus and get me back on my game. These key words and phrases were running through my head: restart, refocus, back on my game, back to basics. I glanced behind me at the Minnesota Wild players who were watching their team from the press box and then looked back down towards the ice … and it was at that moment that I had a revelation.

As the Wild skidded six games before finally winning last night against the Buffalo Sabres we had observed them attempting to fix their broken game night after night by resetting, attempting to get back to basics and use the system and structure that is meant to be the backbone of the squad. Much like me with my iPhone, as they tried to reset back to their baseline operating system and found themselves still facing failure, they grew more and more frustrated and agitated until there was little semblance left of team cohesion.

They came under pressure from fans, themselves, the coaching staff and whoever else could throw out an opinion but no amount of talking, or not talking was going to get them out of the endless cycle of reset, fail. They had to accept they were powerless and start building up from the bottom, which is what appears to be happening now.

The dressing room became increasingly tense with players struggling to explain what was going on. How do you really answer a question with no real answers anyway? Coach Mike Yeo also found himself facing tough questions and the speculation that continued losses may result in his dismissal. If that isn’t a recipe for disaster I’m not really sure what is. With last night’s win came a few small laughs and even a joke out of Clayton Stoner that the team is now undefeated for the new year although a cloud of caution still hung over the press conferences and interviews deep in the belly of the ‘X’ following the contest.

I write this as a simple reminder that sometimes there aren’t any easy fixes or answers and that even when the solution seems simple, the answer is not always as straightforward as it first appears. I believed I could fix my iPhone by getting it back to basics, as I’m sure the Wild believed they could get their team back on track by prescribing to their system. The thing is though, with so many moving parts, like in my phone, a team is only able to control so much before they have to take a deep breath and wait for things to start clicking again.

My iPhone ultimately took some professional help to get back online and even as I type this I’m still not sure whether or not it’s going to come off of life support anytime soon. I’ll go so far as to say the Wild aren’t quite out of the woods just yet either but they are slowly showing signs of intermittent life, something that should make all Wild fans breathe a little easier for the time being.

As we move through the next few games beginning with the Capitals and Kings – two teams known for being ruthless when they want to be – remember that any frustration you’re feeling is probably being felt ten-fold on the bench and while their performance may not be without error or even pretty, it will be a genuine effort being put forth by a team that truly cares about its fans and the state of Wild hockey.

This past weekend, Charlie and I traveled over the river and through the woods (and nearly 350 miles) to the copper-mining community of Houghton, Mich. to see the Gophers take on the Huskies in the team’s first stop of what we’re playfully calling the “WCHA Farewell Tour” – not to make this dramatic or anything, but for some of us, Minnesota’s departure from the conference is far from exciting news.

Here is a brief pictorial recap of our encounters up in Copper Country …

We made it! Not quite the Golden Gate, but the Houghton-Hancock Bridge connects, not surprisingly, the cities of Houghton and Hancock over Portage Lake. The monumental structure is signature to the town (That’s right, it’s on caps, coffee cups, coasters, you name it. Everywhere.) In the winter, they actually lower the bridge so it’s accessible to snowmobiles and skiers, while cars cross over the top!

This is the John J. MacInnes Student Ice Arena, where the Huskies play. Its name comes from one of the most successful coaches in the history of college hockey, with a record of 555-295-39. Saturday night’s attendance at the arena was 3,883 — to give some perspective, that’s more than half the town of Houghton!

MTU’s favorite pup, Blizzard T. Husky, joined Charlie and I for tailgating. The school hosted a party for all the game attendees before Saturday night’s game. We met a couple from Coon Rapids, Minn., Don and Kay, who travel with the Gophers to every away game – since 1996! “This is our summer vacation,” they told us. “Some people have cabins, we watch hockey.” Hats off to them for their dedication to our favorite sport.

Game time! And last, but not least, here is a view from our seats at MacInnes. It was a split for the teams this weekend with 5-3 Huskies, followed by 3-2 Gophers. Game two definitely kept us on our toes!

Tara’s Top-5 Take-Aways:

5. Don Lucia really likes to win…like, 600 times over…

4. Michigan’s Pietila family has rockstar hockey genes.

3. Gophers need to pump up on the power-play.

2. Michigan Tech knows MUSIC. Yes, folks, their pep band even has a bagpipe…a BAGPIPE! How cool is that?!

1. “Michigan Nice” may very well be a close competitor to “Minnesota Nice.” Seriously, fabulously courteous fans in the UP!

All in all, it was a perfect weekend for college hockey, and a special thanks to our new friends up in Houghton for their unwavering hospitality.
